fare of £8 plus one night's subsistence of £18.50 has been allowed. Item 20 has been allowed to the extent of payment for the books i.e.. £7.40.
If we are successful in obtaining funds for the final stage of the study as proposed in your letter dated 22 February 1977, then it may be possible to reimburse some of the charges incurred this year but presently excluded and charge them to the second stage. However, certain items such as telephone call charges, photocopying charges, taxi fares etc, will have to come out of the amount calculated for sundries. I regret that the payment to your two Australian Commonwealth scholars must be ecluded since these are not included in your estimates for the second stage.
I am sorry that we have had to trim your claim but you will appreciate that money for the study has been exceedingly tight and we have done our best to meet as much as possible of your claim and have gone beyond what we originally agreed should be the cost of this study. You should know that in addition to the excess of £1034 paid to you, we have also paid an excess of £760 to Dr Fosh.
