Weekly Rest Days

In the 7 Asian countries in the survey, workers have a statutory right to a weekly rest day.

Social Security

Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan have schemes providing benefits in cases of old age, invalidity and death.

As from 1 January 1977, Hong Kong employees became entitled to 10 paid public holidays a year instead of 6.

In Hong Kong, the number of compulsory rest days was increased from 4 a month to 1 a week as from 1 January 1977.

Hong Kong has a non-contributory scheme financed from general revenue providing for Public Assistance and Disability and · Infirmity allowances, pegged to the COL index. The Disability and Infirmity allowances are non-means tested. Social security and social welfare needs are to be reviewed in 1977 by a DHSS expert (see para. 17 of the covering memorandum).
