PROFESSOR TURNER'S STUDY
1.
I am getting irritated
with this turbulent academic I fear that on the basis of my past contacts with him going back to the mid-60s, Professor Turner seems inclined to write to me on the subject of his and Dr Fosh's financial problems. I attach an original letter from him, dated 2 March, which sets out these 'troubles' at some length and which needs a detailed reply. The letter is not only a claim for the refund of expenses but also calls for action on the subject of the deductions made in respect of UK income tax and national insurance contributions. Some sort of reply from me is clearly needed and I suggest merely a brief acknowledgement saying that the financial matters have been referred to your Department and giving a brief explanation of why, in the event, it was not possible to arrange a meeting of the OLCC before the end of April. Perhaps Mr Duffy would have a word with me on this?
2. One encouraging feature in this rather abrasive letter is that the Hong Kong Labour Department appear to have no fundamental criticisms of Professor Turner's interim report.
