LABOUR RELATIONS IN HONG KONG : IN MRI. PROFESSOR HA TURNER (JMUY 1977)

BY

You will remember that at the meeting of the Overseas Labour Consultative Committee on 30 January 1976 mention was made of the intention to mount an academic study of trade unions and industrial relations in Hong Kong in co-operation with local institutions, including the University of Hong Kong. This study has been undertaken by lrofessor HA Turner, assisted by Frofessor Keith Hart of Yale University and Dr Fatricia Fosh of the University of Bath.

In the time available it was only possible for rofessor Turner to produce an interim and provisional review and two copies of this are attached. It will be considered at the next meeting of the OLCC on 29 April.

Professor Turner has indicated his desire to complete his study but needs to know very soon (by the end of liarch) whether he will be so engaged. He and his colleagues foresee that other consultative work might be available to them in the Easter and Summer vacations and it has therefore been necessary to decide within the 'CO that he should be offered terms to conclude his review, probably by visits to Hong Kong in April and August lasting one week and three to four weeks respectively. This decision is subject to necessary finance being available and enquiries are being made about this.

Comments on the provisional review will be sought at the next OCC meetin, together with advice on the direction which the final phase of Professor Turner's studies should take.

I have written a similar letter to Mr Hargreaves at the TUC.
