CONCLUSION
The first impression of the play is that the topic
has been treated in an unsubtle and heavy handed way that
most 11-year-old children would find quite uninteresting.
It is amateurishly acted and presented and too long to
sustain interest.
The major impression however is not so much that
"Empire Made" is hitting Hong Kong as that a group of
well-meaning and politically naive teachers and actors have
allowed themselves to be used to present blatant left wing
propaganda to junior school children.
Brian Wright, an apparently impartial bystander, said
privately afterwards that if he had seen the play as a
parent he would have taken serious offence at its political
emphasis. An impression of some young members of the
Bowsprit Company is that they have become interested in
Hong Kong and could benefit from taking part in an impartial
and informative discussion on Hong Kong's problems and
achievements.
Copies of "Hong Kong 1977" were given to Mr. Wright and
Mr. Hodson.
