VISIT OF THE "OTTO HAHN" TO HONG KONG

Thank you for your letter of 28 February.

The G KSS representative visited H M S TAMAR on 7 February. He said that the "OTTO HAHN" would probably wish to call at Hong Kong either in May/June or else November/December. In between, it has to be in Germany for a refitting. Apparently, the Germans are trying to get the ship to visit the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Australia as well as Hong Kong and I therefore doubt whether it will be possible to fix up the whole of this Far East tour by May/June. Meanwhile, H M S TAMAR have emphasised to the German Consulate-General that we need one month's notice of the visit, but we (the Secretariat) have still received no formal application from the Consulate- General. I take it from your letters that the Germans in London have not been pressing you either, although you owe them a reply.

3.

I enclose a copy of the Operations Order agreed between H M S TAMAR, Marine Department and the GKS S representative, which sets out the detailed procedures we would expect to be followed in the case of a visit by the "OTTO HAHN". The only difficulty we can foresee at this stage is that our requirement for tugs to be standing by to tow the ship out to sea in case of an emergency may prove awkward for the Germans to meet.

4.

Meanwhile, H M S TAMAR are under the impression from M OD U K Navy's signals of last autumn that the UK Naval authorities would in principle be prepared to offer us use of the Naval Emergency Monitoring Organisation's facilities at Alverstoke providing that the Germans repay them for any extra expense involved.
