Many thanks for your letter of 30 August about the summary
record, in my letter of 26 July to John Mills in the Department
of Industry, of the Prime Minister's conversation on that day with
Sir Lawrence Kadoorie.
You are quite right in thinking that the word "not" was inadvertently omitted from the ante-penultimate sentence of para-
graph 4 of my letter. This sentence should read: "He had not ruled
out the possibility of exporting 700,000 tons of coal in 1982 if this requirement were placed upon his Ministry by the Planning Commission." I am very grateful to you for drawing this to my
attention and should be grateful if you and those to whom my letter was copied would amend it accordingly.
I am sending copies of this letter to Kingsley Jones (H.M. Treasury), Ewen Fergusson (Foreign and Commonwealth Office), James Bretherton (Department of Energy) and John Mills (Department of Industry).
