As you know from our meetings earlier this year, I have been following closely the efforts of the Department of Industry to develop proposals for the new power station on Lantao island. The proposals which are now being put forward by the

Department of Industry have been seen and approved by me.

I am

I

I hope that our proposals will meet with your approval.

confident that our joint efforts will contribute to the future prosperity of the people both of Hong Kong and of the United

Kingdom.

The

The Department of Industry's proposals are concerned with your power station development. As I told you when we met on 26 July, we are keeping closely in touch, through HM Ambassador in Peking, with the Chinese authorities about the possibility of the export of Chinese coal in exchange for the supply of UK mining equipment or other UK goods. There are increasing signs that the Chinese are looking for greater trade with the West and I hope that we will be able to take advantage of this.

With all good wishes.
