CALL BY CHINESE MINISTER OF FOREIGN TRADE ON THE PRIME MINISTER ON 30 NOVEMBER
1. As promised I attach a draft brief for Mr Li's call on the Prime Minister on 30 November at 4 pm. Number 10 have asked for the brief in final form by 5 pm on 25 November. As we agreed the brief should go forward from the DOT, with a covering letter indicating that FCO and MOD views have been taken into account. Number 10 have indicated that they wish the brief to be kept short. I suggest that you will wish to shorten considerably the present personality note which you have on Mr Li.
2. I should be grateful if copy addressees would send direct to you any amendments or comments which they may have. Obviously the most important part of the brief to get absolutely right is the line on defence sales to China.
