Bored tunnel

The bored tunnel has to descend to a depth of 87 m below P.D. to get below the seabed. A longer tunnel will be required.

5.

Apparently the feasibility of constructing a tunnel connection between Lantau and the mainland has been studied by the Consultants, Messrs. Wilbur Smith, who does not favour the idea for the following reasons :

(i) a direct crossing from the mainland to Lantau

will interfere with freedom of movement and anchorage capacity;

(ii)

high ground on the mainland opposite Ma Wan;

(iii) seabed conditions are not ideal, but rather

adverse to the feasibility of a tunnel. Sediments are limited in extent and depth, and rock outcrops are located throughout the crossing; and

(iv) costly excavation and slow progress due to

difficult site conditions.
