For a power station (A) containing four 350 MW generating units, the first to be in commission by 1982 and the fourth at the latest by 1987, an area of about 90 acres is required.
For a possible extension for a power station (B) comprising four 500 MW generating units, the first set to be in commission probably about 1988, an area of about 127 acres would be required.
(iii) The power plant site should be on solid rock, although it would be possible to store fuel on reclaimed land.
Sea Access
The Company has requested a site with direct access for coal ships of up to 90,000 tons deadweight, i.e. drawing about 8 fathoms of water. The Company envisages securing its coal supplies from China, India, Australia and perhaps Indonesia. Although Chinese coal is unlikely to be shipped in vessels as large as this within the next few years, because of the limita - tions of its coal ports, these limitations are likely to be removed in the course of time, and the saving through transport of coal from other supplying countries in ships of this size, rather than in smaller coal ships of about 35, 000 tons deadweight, would be significant in the selling price of electricity supplied.
Cooling Water Requirements
Station (A) would require 630, 000 gallons of water per minute and Station (B) would require 900, 000 gallons per minute. On release, the temperature of the water would be raised by 12-14°F. Thus, very good water change would be necessary and it would not be feasible to extract sufficient water from a confined area. Because the power station would have to close down if the pump-house stopped, it would be dangerous to expose the pump-house to rough sea which might flood the pumps. The water must also be reasonably free of silt to prevent corrosion and erosion of condenser tubes and coolers.
Transmission
It must be possible for the electricity generated to be transmitted economically into the Urban Areas. From the Company's point of view, the best method is by overhead transmission; to mitigate environmental
