We spoke yesterday about the invitations being sought for Mr Stones and Mr Kadoorie, for celebrations associated with the Jubilee, during their expected visit to the UK in June. I understand that your protocol department have written to the organisers of the GLC buffet supper and the King George V Trust dinner. We can still not say whether Stones and Kadoorie will definitely be coming in June. Nevertheless, it would clearly be better to run the risk of being left with unused invitations than to count on the visit being postponed.

There does not seem to be much point in telling Hong Kong of our efforts on the social side while the visit remains in doubt. However, I would be grateful if you could arrange to find out in the next day or so the latest position on these invitations. A positive result might be useful in the event of more encouraging news from Hong Kong.
