15 March 1977, on which you asked for comments.
My first thought was that the "gannets" referred to may well be the Red-Footed Booby (sula sula rubripes) about which Liu Jing-xian and Wang Zi-yu of the Peking Zoological Research Institute wrote an article in Issue No 3 (1975) of the Zoological Magazine. There the Booby is described as one of the commonest sea birds in the Paracels, found in thousands but only on East lsland. article in question has been translated into English by lain Orr.
