HONG KONG: PQ BY MR TOM ARNOLD MP: IMPORTS OF IVORY

1. Mr Tom Arnold MP (Conservative Hazel Grove) has put down

a Written Question to ask how much ivory, both by volume and price, was imported into Hong Kong in the period during which figures are most recently available.

2. While Mr Arnold has in the past shown an interest in Hong Kong affairs - he asked two Questions last year on the position of British passport holders in Hong Kong he has not previously shown any interest in conservation matters and is not

known to be a member of the conservationist lobby. It is

possible, however, that the latter has prompted him to ask this Question. The lobby has complained privately that Hong Kong, on whose behalf the UK acceded last year to the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna, entered reservations on the African and Indian elephant (as well as on all reptiles), which have not yet been

lifted.

3. I submit a draft reply based on information supplied by the Hong Kong Government. (Hong Kong telegram no. 658 of 4 July.)

STD concur.
