So far as the United King- dom is concerned, the British Council, with financial support from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has extended to Eastern Europe the academic links and interchange schemes which it oper- ates in Western Europe, and this has facilitated the establishment of 32 depart- mentai links and the funding of 23 visits of individual scholars. Additional funds have been made available for seminars in adult education with Hungary and and for interlending Czechslovakia between national libraries in the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union. Falkland Islands

Sir Nigel Fisher asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will arrange for an exhibi- tion relating to the Falkland Islands to be displayed in the Upper Waiting Hall.

Mr. Rowlands: I understand that arrangements have been made with the authorities of the House for the exhibi- tion to be held in the Upper Waiting Hall from 6th to 8th July.

Civil Servants (Numbers)

Mr. Brotherton asked the Minister for the Civil Service how many civil servants in central and local government there are per head of population: and how this compares with each of the EEC member countries.

Considerable efforts have been made to obtain this information. proved possible to obtain figures that would permit meaningful comparisons with other EEC countries. I have written to the hon. Member to explain the diffi- culties. The latest available estimate- mid-1975-for the United Kingdom is 0-09 civilian employees of central and local government per head of population.

ENERGY

Research Expenditure

Mr. Wigley asked the Secretary of State for Energy how much the Government expended in 1976 on research into new sources of energy, such as tidal and solar energy and what proposals he has for increasing this sum in future years.

Mr. Eadie: The Government expendi- ture in the United Kingdom on research and development on such sources for the financial year 1976-77 was about £1-35 million.
