suppliers. It is therefore most important for the EEC to propose a form of control which will give a global limit to textile and clothing imports. Without such a control, cumulative disruption from the growth of a large number of new suppliers could undermine the objective of regulating and regularising trade in textile products.
Representatives of the TUC Textile, clothing and Footwear Industries Committee will be meeting yourself, Mr Dell and Mr Varley after the next session of the GATT Textiles Committee in May. Hopefully at that time some progress on renegotiation will have been made. However, in view of the delay in the European Community, I thought I should let you know the Committee's views on the need to persuade the other EEC countries of the validity of the UK's proposals. I am writing in similar terms to the Secretary of State for Trade and the Secretary of State for Industry.
Yours sincerely
