THE READY-TO-WEAR FESTIVAL
The 1977 Hong Kong Ready-to-Wear Festival, which ended at the weekend, drew six editorials from the Chinese Press. Wah Kiu Yat Po saw the record
Kiy number of buyers and manufacturers attending this/year's show as "a good indication of the continuous progress of Hong Kong's garment industry." It expressed regret however, that not enough attention was paid to Hong Kong's domestic market. Referring to the Young Designers Award Competition, the paper said the future of Hong Kong's garment industry depended on young fashion designers.
The staging of the R-T-W Festival in/Tokyo was seen by Wah Kiu as a move to underline the importance of the Japanese market to Hong Kong. Its sister paper, Wah Kiu Man Po, thought/that if the Tokyo show was successful, it would not only "establish a good name for Hong Kong garments in the largest city of the world but would also help promote other Hong Kong products in Japan."
Sing Pao called on the Trade Development Council and the Commerce and Industry Department to set up a joint group to plan the future development of the garment industry.
The Hong Kong Daily News called on the authorities to regularise the allocation of quotas for cotton textile exports "so that there will be room for bigger development in the export of garments and other related goods.”
