In Germany there was a steady growth by quantity through

the recession and in 1976. The quantity of exports to Germany in 1975

was 17% higher than in 1974; the quantity of exports for the first

three quarters of 1976 was a further 20% higher than in the corresponding

period in 1975. The United States as a market was rather seriously

affected by the recession; but the recovery has been rapid. The

quantity of exports to the United States for the first three quarters

of 1976 was 47% higher than in the same period a year ago. The

quantity of exorts to the United Kingdom during the three years

1974 to 1976 remained below the average level in 1973.

There are marked but differing seasonal pattems in Hong

Kong's domestic exorts to these three main markets. The quantity

of exports to Germany reaches a peak in the first quarter, to the

United Kingdom a less obvious peak in the second quarter and to

the United States in the third quarter. As the United States is

the largest market, the seasonal peak for the total quantity of

domestic exports is also in the third quarter.

In 1975 only exports of clothing and of watches were

higher in quantity than in 1974; both increases being attributable

to the sudde popularity of two products, denim clothing and electronic

Watches. Because of the demand for these products, export prices

for them actually increased in 1975 (in contrast to export prices

generally). The unit valve index for domestic exports of watches

increased by 20% in 1975 on 1974, keen competition in the cotton

clothing industry made possible only a 6% increase in the unit value

index for domestic exports of cotton clothing during the same period.

The quantity of exorts cf watches increased by 4% and of cotton

clothing by 29%.
