9. Possible Objections of Host Country: The first phase of the

project has already been completed in Hong Kong; Hong Kong's British authorities know of the project and raised no objections to this field-work.

10. Other Research Already Done in this Field: Most specialist studies on Chinese agriculture this far have focussed on macro-level trends and policies. Detailed research on what actually goes on inside China's villages has been comparatively neglected, since scholars very rarely have had access to China's countryside and have had to confine themselves to China's official media. A great deal can, of course, be learned from such sources, and our own study is in part shaped by our awareness of the information and hypotheses derived from them. But it has been hard to secure from such sources detailed knowledge about how economic development occurs within a Chinese village, or about the internal organization and politics of Chinese villages, or even about the daily lives under socialism of China's peasantry.
