68. The past year has seen a number of interesting
developments in the field of public education about, and
participation in, the development process.
$9. A Development Education Fund was established, initially
for a period until March 1978, to help voluntary organisati
bodies and other non-governmental organisations carry out
development education and information work in the United
Kingdom. The Fund, which was announced at the end of the
year, consists initially of £150,000 ($
) but it

could be increased in
later years.

An Advisory Committee, under the
Chairmanship of the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for
Overseas Development, has been set up to advise the Minister
on the selection of projects to be financed from the
Fund.
70. It is hoped that the Fund will both increase public understanding of development issues and help provide factual
information an problems of social and economic development.
Projects which are clearly defined, have a strong measure
of voluntary support and involve people at the community
and regional levels as well as at national level, will
be accorded priority. It is not intended that the Fund
should be used to propagate particular political views, or
to finance campaigns against the policies of the Briti sh (or any other) Government
