6. Most multilateral allocations are to meet cash commitments arising from international obligations (eg EEC) or signed commitments to multilateral organisations, many of which the UK is likely to continue

to wish to support. There is therefore very little scope for reducing

multilateral aid in the short term. Room for manoeuvre in the longer

term depends primarily on whether it is decided to renew UK commitments

to existing multilateral programmes or their successors. It also

depends on the future level of the aid programme and the proportion of that programme which it is agreed should be allocated for multilateral aid. The following paragraphs describe the main multilateral commitments in more detail, identifying areas for future decision, the dates by which such decisions would be required and the implications

of likely future developments.
