1. Thank you for sending us a copy of your draft. We shall be checking the statistics in it in conjunction with Research Department and will report back to you.
2. I wonder if Mr Stewart (HKGD) should not also receive a copy because of the implications for UK/Hong Kong policy (your para 12c). You may like to be aware that the Minister of State (Lord Goronwy-Roberts) has asked for an assessment of the economic benefits of the present constitutional position of Hong Kong which we are at present preparing.
3. An aspect of UK defence sales to China not so far covered is the impact on UK economy, particularly industrial employment. Presumably we could work on this, with MOD's Economic Adviser (with whom we are in touch in UK/Saudi Arabia defence sales), once the paper has gone across to MOD.
