A town hall already exists in Yuen Long providing
a variety of community services.
Sheung Shui Social Centre

The item is currently in Category 3 of the Public Works Programme. The Director of Social Welfare will seek to upgrade the item to Category A very shortly so that the centre could be operational by 1979/80.

The District Officer, Tai Po, has completed discussions with representatives of the Social Welfare and Urban Services Department and local people on the kind of community centre required for Sheung Shui. The consensus is for a Yuen Long Town Hall type of building with minor variations to allow for a larger auditorium and library. Management of the centre will hopefully be on the lines of the Yuen Long Town Hall with a management committee comprising local community leaders and Government representatives. The committee will assume overall responsibility for staff and finance as well as activities of the centre. This will serve to involve the participation of local people in a positive way in community development.

The centre will serve not only the growing area of Sheung Shui/Shek u Hui/Fanling/Luen o Hui, but also the surrounding rural area.
