Annex D
Provision of Secondary Schools in the New Territories
As part of the current plan for implementing the aims of the 1974 White Paper on Secondary Education in Hong Kong over the Next Decade, a priority Schools 3uilding Programme phased in stages has been established to form the basis for planning the future expansion of secondary schools in Hong Kong. Taking into account the rapid build-up of population in the lew Territories, in particular the three New Towns, 20 out of a total of 43 new secondary schools planned for Stage I (1976- 1979) of the Porgramme are projects in the New Territories. Stage II of the Programme (1978-1981) envisages even further expansion for the liew Territories. Altogether 30 out of a total of a further 35 schools planned for Stage II will be built in the New Territories. The capacity, financing and implementation timetable for each school have been worked out and will be adhered to as far as possible. Because of the build-up of population in the few Towns, the majority of low Territories schools in Stages I and II of the Programme will be concentrated in the New Towns. Nonetheless, the needs of the rural areas and the islands have not been overlooked. For example, on South Lantau, one school with a full capacity of 630 sponsored by the Heung Yee Kuk will be completed towards the end of 1979. Another school earmarked for Sai Kung/Hang lau should commence construction in 1978/79, and is expected to be completed by the end of 1979.
