Rural Electrification

In January 1977, a list of 32 villages at present without a mains electricity supply and where such a supply is considered desirable was sent to the China Light and Power Company together with relevant information on population, type and number of structures involved and possible future development, so as to enable the Power Company to carry out a commercial appreciation to determine whether a capital contribution from villagers is required.

Street Lighting Programme 1977/78

In the Street Lighting Programme 1977/78, a total of

77 New Territories items are included:

(a)

32 items of new installations and improvements in conjunction with roadworks;

(b)

16 items of lighting of back streets, pedestrian ways and lanes;

(c)

29 items of new installations and improvements in existing roads.

Among these items, 34 are proposals by this Administration to remove traffic/crime blackspots and were prompted by consultation with various rural committees and village representatives. estimated cost of the 77 items amounts to 2.7 million, accounting for more than two-thirds of the whole Programme for 1977/73.

Village Street Lighting

The New Territories Administration will be under- taking the installation of village street lighting as part of the Local Public Works Programme in 1977/78.

The Public Works Department will advise on the design, installation and maintenance of the village street lighting projects to be undertaken by District Offices. anticipated that a sizeable portion of the 5 million included in the Draft Estimates 1977/78 for Local Public Works will be spent on village street lighting.
