In addition to the above projects, there are also plans to extend and improve the existing Fanling, Pok Oi and Yan Chai hospitals. Amongst the three, the Fanling hospital project is the most advanced and is currently in the Rural Development Sub-Programme of the Public Works Programme to be implemented in two phases. The project will convert the hospital into a district hospital capable of dealing with emergency cases from the Fanling and Sheung Shui areas. private donor has already contributed to the project, and Phase I (the addition of a 5-storey extension block to the existing hospital to provide emergency receiving service, more consulting rooms and staff quarters) is scheduled to be completed in 1978/79, and Phase II (raising the bed complement to 110) will be completed the year after.
