Thank you for your letter of 22nd July about a visit here in October. I have written separately about your proposal to visit China.

2.

October isn't a very good month for a visit because of the opening of the Leg. Co. session, and because it is always a very busy month my diary is already crowded. Also, from my point of view, I will be seeing you in London in November in any case.

3.

*

In my Leg. Co. speech on October 5th I will be describing our proposals for far-reaching and rather expensive expansion of social welfare payments and services, and also probably plans progressively tó prohibit the employment of children as assisted places in secondary education become available.

This may possible give rise to a further groan about UK pressure, and if it does I will have to deal with it. In this situation it might be better if you were not here at the same time!

4.

So generally speaking it would suit us better if you came in, say, January. However you are welcome any time, and if it has to be October I hope you will take us as you find us.

Incidentally my own leave plans, subject,

to your comments, are:

Nov. 10 leave HK

6.

go to Scotland

Nov. 20 return London and stay through:-

Nov. 11 arrive UK:

Nov. 21-25 and 28-30

Nov. 30 return Scotland

Dec. 24 to London and Hong Kong

B

Dec. 30 return Hong Kong

Would this be convenient for the FCO

my dates in London could be shifted if necessary?
