Mr David

THE GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG'S VISIT, 21-30 NOVEMBER

1.

We have given Mr Bray copies of the Governor's letter of 9 September to Mr Stewart and the skeleton programme that you have prepared for the Governor's visit.

2. Mr Bray telephoned me yesterday evening to ask that we should set aside Wednesday, 30 November for a lunch with the Commonwealth and Diplomatic Writers Association and I should be grateful if you would do this. There have been similar lunches when the Governor has been here before and I expect that Sir Murray MacLehose will be prepared to take it on.

3. I took the opportunity to tell Mr Bray that I thought it would be better to delay trying to make appointments with the Secretaries of State for Trade and Industry and the two PUSS concerned (paragraph 2 of the Governor's letter) until the question of the Governor's coming in the next week or so for discussions on the MFA has been resolved. Bray_agreed. He said, incidentally, that he understood that Sir Peter Thornton has retired as PUS in the DOT. Governor's request to see him should therefore be treated as one to see Sir Peter Thornton's successor.
