PROGRAMME FOR YOUR VISIT TO LONDON

At the end of your letter of 9 September to John Stewart you asked us to let you have around now some idea of how the programme for your visit to London in November was shaping.

Tim David gave you a copy of an early draft when you were here in September, and John Stewart will have given you a somewhat later version. I enclose a copy of the programme as it now looks: subject to the comments below, it is virtually complete. The only reply we are still awaiting is from Lieutenant Commander Buckley about your appointment with the Duke of Kent.

2. The programme does not include an appointment with the Secretary of State for Industry. When we spoke to Mr Varley's Private Office they questioned whether it was necessary for him to see you since you were already calling on his Permanent Secretary. If you would like us to persist with this appointment, it would be helpful if you could give us an indication of the specific points you want to discuss. Should Mr Varley still be unable to fit you in, would you like us to try for an appointment with one of his junior Ministers?

3. Mr Dell, Sir Leo Pliatzky and the Chief of the Defence Staff have all asked if we could let them know what subjects you particularly want to discuss with them, so that they can ensure they are properly briefed. We have told them what we think you are likely to raise, but are there any points that you would particularly like us to warn them about?

4. A number of people who were not on the list of people that you said you wanted to see have asked to see you, and we have, as you will see, confirmed appointments with the First Sea Lord and with Sir Frank Cooper, Permanent Secretary at the MOD. Two other appointments are only tentative, pending your confirmation that you want to keep them. These are the appointments on 23 November with Mr M B Casey, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive of British Shipbuilders, and the dinner engagement as the guest of the
