POSSIBLE VISIT BY LORD GORONWY-ROBERTS

1.

As you know from his message in FCO telegram no. 114, Lord Goronwy-Roberts was sorry to miss the opportunity of having a talk with you this week-end. There were a number of matters, including the budget, on which, I think, he would have wanted to exchange ideas.

2. Lord Goronwy hopes to reinstate a visit to South East Asia later in the year. He is thinking of visits to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Jakarta and, possibly, Brunei. Possible dates are late July, early August or early September. The Minister is also contemplating a visit to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and the Gilberts later in the year, perhaps in October or November. If these visits come off – and I gather that there are a lot of ifs and buts - Lord Goronwy has it in mind to combine one of them with a visit to Hong Kong. I thought that you would like to have early warning of this tentative plan. I will let you know as and when any plans take shape.
