NEW COMMITTEE ON DIVERSIFICATION OF ECONOMY

The Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Murray MacLehose, has appointed a committee to advise "whether the process of diversification of the economy, with particular reference to the manufacturing sector, can be facilitated by the modification of existing policies or the introduction of new policies." The committee has the Financial Secretary, Mr. Philip Haddon-Cave chairman and includes prominent representatives of industry banking and business circles. Also included are Hong Kong's Director of Trade, Industry and Customs, Mr. David Jordan, and the Secretary for Economic Services, Mr. David Jeaffreson. A Hong Kong Government spokesman explained that the committee would examine the principal factors which have contributed to Hong Kong's economic growth. The committee would also be considering the implications of the regulation of international trade in textiles for the growth rate of the economy, and would be making a study of the factors which have been influential in attracting new industries to Hong Kong in recent years.
GOVERNMENT PLAN TO DEVELOP TSING YI ISLAND
The Hong Kong Government's plan to develop Tsing Yi island as a major industrial area, including a community development programme, will cost an estimated HK$1,121 million (£131,882,000). Total cost of the 10-year development programme includes HK/364 million (342,823,000) for engineering works and HKZ523 million (£61,529,000) for providing Community facilities. According to a Hong Kong Government spokesman, emphasis has been placed on promoting large scale industrial projects which include the coastal developments by such companies as Dow Chemicals, Outboard Marine, Feoso Oil, Chemsyn, Hong Kong United Dockyard, and the plans to establish two more shipyards on the west coast of the island. In addition, land will be made available to provide community facilities for the targeted population of 185,000 people who will live on Tsing Yi by the mid 1980s. Tsing Yi lies off the south-west coast of Hong Kong's New Territories and is joined to the mainland by a road bridge.
RECREATIONAL CENTRE FOR THE HANDICAPPED
The loyal song Kong Jockey Club has donated HKX5 million (0533,235) for building a recreational centre for physically handicapped people at Pokfulam, Hong Kong Island. The centre will offer facilities for both handicapped and able bodied people for volley ball, billiards, chess, horse riding, and archery. Dormitory accommodation will be available for 50 people initially, and this will later be expanded to 100. The Hong Kong Government has given approval for land to be granted to the Hong Kong Physically Handicapped and Able-bodied Association. Work on the centre will start
