Mr. Luard: I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave on 13th January to iny hon. Friend the Member for Holborn and St. Pancras, South (Mrs. Jeger).

Rhodesia

Mr. Fairbairn asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the cost to Great Britain up until 31st December 1976 of the Rhodesian Conference in Geneva.

Mr. Tomlinson: Although the exact cost of the Rhodesia Conference up until 31st December 1976 will not be known until all bills have been met and expen- diture brought to account, it is unlikely to differ greatly from the latest estimate of 299,600.

Governor of Hong Kong

Alr. Parry asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs on what date the term of office of the Governor of Hong Kong comes to an end.

Mr. Luard: Her Majesty The Queen has approved the extension of the Governor's term of office until November 1978.

Mr. Parry asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he expects to make a statement on the appointment of the new Governor of Hong Kong.

Mr. Parry asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he intends to appoint to the Governor- ship of Hong Kong someone with political experience.

Mr. Luard: I would not wish to specu- late on what advice my right hon. Friend might give to Her Majesty The Queen when the time comes to appoint a new Governor of Hong Kong.

Mr. Parry asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what emoluments the Governor of Hong Kong receives in addition to his salary.

Mr. Luard: The Governor of Hong Kong receives no emoluments in addi- tion to his salary. He is paid an enter- tainment allowance by the Hong Kong Government.

Mr. Parry asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the present salary of the Governor 'of Hong Kong; and how much of this is

taxable.

Mr. Luard: The Governor of Hong Kong's present salary is $HK330,000— approximately £41,000 at the current rate of exchange. The Governor's salary, which is paid by the Hong Kong Govern- ment, is not taxable.

Mr. Parry asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the recent discussions between the Governor of Hong Kong and the Minister of State.

Mr. Luard: My right hon. and noble Friend the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and the Gov- ernor of Hong Kong discussed the Hong Kong Government's plans for further pro- gress in labour, social and allied fields in Hong Kong, as set out by the Gov- ernor in his statement at the opening of the current session of the Legislative Council on 6th October 1976.

United Kingdom High Commission, Botswana

Mr. Lawson asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many passports or other travel documents were issued in 1976 to persons originating from the Republic of South Africa, by Her Majesty's High Commission in Botswana ; and how many were issued in each of the five previous years.
