EXECUTIONS IN BERMUDA: LETTER FROM MR PETER BUTTERWORTH

1.

те

In the attached letter to Mr Judd, Mr Butterworth asks him to intervene to stop the Bermuda executions. Mr Butterworth claims that there are "doubts about the fairness of the judicial procedures". But he does not elaborate on his doubts. He is probably, however, referring to the suggestion recently made in some quarters that the jury was not properly representative of Bermudian society and was racially biased.

2.

Whatever is behind his doubts, they are unfounded: the judicial procedures leading to the confirmation of the death sentences were entirely correct and there was no question of a miscarriage of justice. I recommend that Mr Rowlands should reply to Mr Butterworth on the lines of the attached draft.
