Mr Brennani

Dear Mr Armstrong

This is to inform you that on the 10th and 11th December 1977 Amnesty International will be convening a conference in Stockholm on the abolition of the death penalty throughout the world. It is to cordially invite you to attend this meeting that I am writing at the present time.

The conference will have been preceded by a set of regional seminars in Paris, Hamburg, New York, Colombo, Lusaka and perhaps the Caribbean. The latter two seminars have been organized by the All Africa Conference of Churches and the Caribbean Conference of Churches respectively.

The conference will be chaired by Mr Garfield Todd of Rhodesia/Zimbabwe.

Persons who have already given their consent to attend the conference are the Minister of Justice of the Austrian Republic, Dr Christian Broda, Canon Burgess Carr of the All Africa Conference of Churches and Ramsey Clark, former United States Attorney-General.

You will find enclosed a factsheet which sets out the matters from which the agenda of the conference will be drawn and a brief description of Amnesty International's Death Penalty Program.

Details of practical arrangements and accommodation in Stockholm will be forwarded to all participants in due course.

The conference will launch a period of intense activity by Amesty International, in cooperation with other NGOs, towards ending the practice of the death penalty wherever it may occur in the world. We hope that you will be able to attend this important meeting which we hope will make a constructive and original contribution to the subject.

Enc.

Yours sincerely

моя

Martin Ennals Secretary-General
