Four death sentences were imposed in 1972 but although no appeals are recorded for 1972 or 1973, no executions were carried out between 1965 and 1975 (the last year covered by our source).

A new Criminal Code introduced in November 1975 restricted the use of capital punishment to convictions for treason. In the period 1964-73, 77 sentences of death were "recorded". ie recommended for Royal Mercy by the sentencing court.

This was the case of Michael X (Michael de Freitas/Malik) who appealed unsuccessfully to the Judicial Committee of the

Privy Council. This appeal was not connected with

the Prerogative of Mercy.
