Comments

The second extension of the term of office of Sir Murray Maclehose ends in November 1978. The only HMOCS candidate for the post will be Sir Denys Roberts, Chief Secretary (but see under Chief Secretary, Hong Kong below). A DS replacement will be required (or possibly a political one).

Sir Edwin Leather's term of office ends on 31 March 1977. The appointment has always been a political one but is now considered to be a political or a DS/ HMOCS appointment.

Sir Denys Roberts will reach the age of 55 (normal HMOCS retirement age) in January 1978. He is expected to stay on for two years. He will be a strong

runner to become Chief Justice when Sir Geoffrey Briggs reaches retirement age (65) in May 1979. (The post of Chief Secretary is considered to be h promotion of an HMOCS Officer within the

Service.)

No further appointment is likely to be necessary. The present Governor should see the Territory to Independence late 1977 or 1978.

Mr Champion's term of office (3 years) ends in November 1978. The only possible HMOCS or ex HMOCS candidates who might be available are Todd, Hong Kong (formerly Deputy Governor, Seychelles) and D K H Dale, Secretary to the President, Seychelles. Both speak French.
