recommend that the appointment of a new Governor of the Turks and Caicos need not be dealt with at the DTSAB meeting arranged for June.
Bermuda
10.
It was noted that Mr Lloyd, the Deputy Governor, was due to see Sir Peter Ramsbotham, the new Governor, in Washington on 20 May. It was suggested that Sir Peter should be informed in advance of his meeting with Mr Lloyd that once he has taken up his post in Bermuda we would be consulting him about a further extension of Mr Lloyd's appointment beyond April 1978. Since Sir Peter Ramsbotham was not going to take up his duties as Governor until late August/early September his views on an extension of Mr Lloyd's appointment would not be known in time for the next meeting of the DTSAB.
Gibraltar
11. It was agreed that there was no reason why Sir John Grandy's request for an extension of his term of office until April 1978 should not be dealt with by means of a written submission. The point had been raised at the last meeting of the DTSAB and no objection had been raised. It would now suit us to extend the present Governor's term of appointment since it had been agreed that à DS Deputy Governor should replace the present incumbent, Mr E H Davis, some months before a new Governor was appointed. The longer Sir John Grandy remained in Gibraltar the more time there would be for the new Deputy Governor to find his feet before a new Governor took up his appointment.
12.
Mr Carrick confirmed that POD would produce a candidate for the post of Deputy Governor. They had not as yet, however, earmarked one.
13. It was noted that the choice of a new Governor rested with the MOD. It seemed unlikely that there would be more than one name to submit to the DTSAB which, on past form, could be expected to endorse the MOD's choice.
Gilbert Islands
14. It was agreed that Mr Smith's term as Governor could be extended, provided his health allowed. (Mr Smith has since said that while he would not object to remaining as Governor for a short period beyond the end of 1977, he would not be happy to remain if independence were to be postponed for too long. will have completed 5 years in the Gilberts by July 1978.)
