Reference.....

Folio 34: letter from Mr Bridge, Hong Kong.

Feels that drop in salary may not be such a serious problem for HK officers aged about 50 since they could retire on pension from HK. More mature officers might be better than young ones. Experience in a UK local authority is possibly more directly relevant than experience in HK

Folio 40 letter from Mr Le Breton, Anguilla

Does not altogether agree that the job of Governor requires skills of a diplomat, nor that previous service as DO is irrelevant. Governors are responsible for doing, diplomats for observing, reporting etc. No place for trainee posts

in small territories.

Folio 38: let ser from Mr Jones, Montserrat

Essential that Governor knows how colonial government works. HK service would not necesarily provide this knowledge, nor would OCS experience elsewhere.

Folio 39: letter from Mr Wallace, BVI

Agrees that DT desks in FCO should be manned by officers with DT experience. Doubts whether HK officers would have suitable experience. Governors do need wide experience of DT problems. Agrees with forecasts for BVI. Annual leave would help to minimise loneliness of Governors' position.
