on the Retention of Sir Murray

Leaders of both Hong Kong and Kowloon kaifong welfare associations have decided to read a delegation to London to petition the British Govern- ment to retain His Excellency, Sir Murray MacLehose, as Governor of Hong Kong when his present term of office expires.

Sir Murray's present term is due to expire in October next year. He said in a television interview a week ago that he is approaching sixty. and that he would not stay on.

It happened that during his tenure of office here, the world-wide economic recession broke out. Both commerce and industry in Hong Kong encountered unprecedented hardships. As a result, the plans laid down could not all be carried to completion according to schedule. However, Sir Murray strove hard, during this difficult period, to cheer up the people of Hong Kong and maintained very good relations with all quarters. It may be said that, on the whole, most residents of Hong Kong have confidence in him.

We believe that if the Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs understood the people of Hong Kong, he would know that acceptance of the kaifongs' petition conformed to their wishes.
