Sir,

96

I have the honour to refer to my letter of 28 July 1976

as well as to the exchange of views which took place on the occasion of the Twenty-seventh session of the Executive Committee of the High Commissioner's Programme regarding the problem of resettling small groups of Indo-Chinese displaced persons who have left their countries of origin or habitual residence in small boats.

The concern of your Government for these persons was reflected in the statement made by the Representative of United Kingdom at this meeting, and I would like to take this opportunity of expressing the appreciation of the High Commissioner for the support that your Government has given to his endeavours to help them.

I enclose for your information an up-to-date table giving informa- tion on the number of these displaced persons and the number of those accepted for resettlement in various countries.

I am, moreover, able to inform you that, in response to the High Commissioner's appeal, the Government of the United States has agreed to accept up to one hundred families per month on the understanding that the international community will continue to contribute to a solution of this difficult problem.

In view of the notable effort made by the United States and by other countries, such as France, and the urgent need to find resettlement opportunities for these refugees as soon as possible after their arrival,

!

The Secretary of State for

Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs

LONDON

United Kingdom
