SIR RALPH BATEMAN'S CALL ON THE SECRETARY OF STATE
6€
1.
I attach a copy of Mr Cope's letter of 11 February to Mr Statham giving details of the main subjects likely to be discussed when Sir Ralph Bateman calls on the Secretary of State on 16 March. Briefing is in hand on these points.
2. The CBI have now advised me however that Sir Ralph may ask the Secretary of State for a short account of his visit to Iran, in particular whether there are any current developments which could affect our trading prospects with Iran, adversely or otherwise. Could MED please let me have a note on this point for inclusion in the main brief, together with any talking points to be incorporated into the steering Brief?
3. The Secretary of State's proposed visit to Japan, China and Hong Kong might also be raised, particularly if Sir Ralph (or other British industrialists) are to accom- pany the Secretary of State. Here again we should like a short note for each country for the background brief covering the reasons and objectives of this visit and any particular steps the Secretary of State intends to take to assist British industry. A short additional paragraph for each country on the 'Line to take' would be helpful.
The briefs can be in draft form, only a couple of paragraphs for each country, but must reach me before Wednesday evening, 10 March.
