IV. Comparison of the boundary established by the 1910 Agreement with that shown
on selected modern mapping
1.
The British boundary maps at 1:250,000 scale (see para. III. 9), were compared with the more authoritative French maps at 1:200,000, (see para. III, 11), and no definite detectable differences could be seen. The former, being clearer and at a more convenient scale, were therefore taken to give a good representation of the boundary.
2. The British boundary maps at 1:250,000 scale (of para. III, 9) were then compared with series 1501 which at present covers the whole boundary except the part lying between 10°30′E and 13°30′E (i.e. sheets ND 32-12 and ND 33-9). Minor differences which appeared to result from attempts to plot the 1907-08 demarcation line on a different, up-to-date topographical base were ignored, but the following definite changes in boundary alignment were noted: (see note 12).
(i)
1501 sheet ND 31-12, at c. GF 8830. Spot height 381 represents a turning point on the boundary between stations 52 and 53 which was not included in the 1907-08 demarcation line, causing a divergence from that line.
(ii)
1501 sheet ND 32-9, at c. KK 3195. The boundary here has been clearly altered, about 13 square miles having been transferred to Nigeria.
(iii)
1501 sheet ND 32-9, from KK 6453 to KK 7838. The straight-line boundary has been replaced by an irregular boundary and about 6 or 7 square miles transferred to Niger.
(iv)
(v)
(vi)
1501 sheet ND 32-9, at c. KK 9942. The boundary has been moved, up to about 3⁄4 mile, clearly to keep a road inside Nigeria; 1 or 2 square miles have been thus transferred to Nigeria.
1501 sheet ND 32-10, from LK 9073 to the southern edge of the sheet. The 1907-08 straight-line boundary has been largely replaced by a more sinuous line, although the general alignment is similar, with deviations up to about
1⁄2 mile at c. LK 9672 and MK 4845.
1501 sheet ND 32-14, at MK 5938. The boundary has been moved to include Angua Dala in Niger, instead of Nigeria as in the 1907-08 demarcation; see Article II, paragraph 6 of the Agreement of 1910, (Bibliography, item 5), which states quite emphatically that Angua Dala is on the British side of the boundary. Dichi, respelt Dishi, remains on the Nigeria side of the boundary (cf. para. IV. 3(vi)).
(vii) 1501 sheet ND 32-15, at NK 4317. Jobi has been transferred, by a slight
boundary adjustment, to Niger.
(viii) 1501 sheet ND 32-11, at c. NK 9745. The boundary has been moved about
1 mile to the north-west, to include Goaleri in Nigeria; the boundary then remains noticeably to the north-west of the 1907-08 alignment as far east as c. PK 3067, transferring some 3-4 square miles to Nigeria.
(ix) 1501 sheet ND 35-10. The east-west alignment in Lake Chad is about 1⁄2 mile
north of the latitude given in the 1910 Agreement; this may perhaps be explicable when the as yet unpublished 1501 sheet to the west, ND 33-9, is available. The 1910 Agreement is ambiguous in its definition of this east- west alignment. Article I states that from the mouth of the Komadugu Yobe the frontier follows the parallel of 13°42′29′′, the then latitude of the river mouth. It does not say where the boundary should run if the river mouth
