I. Introduction

This study of the Nigeria-Niger international boundary reveals, on modern topographic mapping, deliberate although not extensive changes of alignment which appear to have no legal validity. No documents detailing or justifying the changes could be found, and exactly how and by whom the changes were made remains in doubt.

Texts of boundary agreements have not been reproduced since they are available elsewhere, either in Hertslet's "The Map of Africa by Treaty", or as H.M. Stationery Office Treaty Series documents. On the other hand, to help anyone doing further work on this boundary a detailed review of material consulted has been included, (parts III, V, and VII), and also a review of boundary changes noted, (part IV).

Some of the detail will be unimportant for some purposes, so the list of contents should be consulted before attempting to use the study. In particular, readers wishing only to know what mapping to use as source material for depiction of the boundary should turn straight to part VI.

References to the notes in part VIII are indicated in the text by the appropriate note number in brackets.

The abbreviation 'MRLG' appearing in this paper refers to the Map Research and Library Group of the Mapping and Charting Establishment, R.E.
