BOUNDARY DISCLAIMER NOTES ON KAPS AND CHARTS PRODUCED BY THE DIRECTORATE OF MILITARY SURVEY

1.

Thank you for your letter of 9 October in which you asked for our advice on two new proposed disclaimers to replace that used at present (which we agree is unsatisfactory).

2. We think, with respect, that your two suggested new disclaimers are also inadequate. They appear likely to lead to misunderstanding about whether authority is disclaimed with regard to, for instance, dependent territories. The use of the word "political" might also be misunderstood, while the political status of a territory is not the only point which the disclaimer is intended to cover.

3.

We therefore suggest that you consider the following formula:

"DiS maps are not to be regarded as authoritative on boundaries or political status except in relation to United Kingdon territories."

This formula covers both the points on which authority is dis- claimed. It would also be suitable for use on all maps, and there- fore avoids any problems of the wrong disclaimer (or none) being aplied to particular maps.

Livins ever,

Fatosmad Cabin
