HONG KONG BOUNDARY DEPICTION

Referenc:

A.

1.

D/S y 3/3/10 of 4 December 1975 (enclosed)

The introduction of the new boundary/sovereignty disclaimer note (Reference 4) has produced possible anomolies in our current practice for depicting the boundaries of Hong Kong.

2.

An example of the current practice, which is similar to that followed by the Crown Lands and Surveys Dept Hong Kong is enclosed (Series GSGS 5061 Hong Kong Ean 4 GSGS). The following should be noted.

3.

a. The mainland section (A to B) is shown with a full international

boundary symbol. This is normal military cartographic practice.

b.

The highwater lines of Mirs Bay and Deep Bay (B to C and I to a) are not symbolized, but a special note is shown in the margin. This is a departure from normal military cartographic practice, but was a require..ent of the Colonial Office in January 1956.

C. The "Square boundary", (C to D to E to F and G to H to I) is shown by a full international boundary symbol. This is not the normal military cartographic practice for division of sovereignty over the sea, but resulted from prolonged correspondence between the Colonial Office, Hong Kong, and the Service Ministries from 1956-1958.

d. Lantau Island (F to G) No boundary or division of sovereignty is shown.

Would you please advise whether or not you consider the new boundary/ sovereignty disclaimer note is compatable with our current practice, and if not what changes you require us to make.

4. We have three maps in work that could be affected' by your decision, and thus would appreciate an early reply.
