HONG KONG BOUNDARY DEPICTION
1.
I attach a copy of Mr Brading's letter D/Svy 3/1/60 of 19 Harch seeking our advice on whether the new boundary disclaimer note which we formulated for the Directorate of Military Survey last year conflicts with the cartographic practice being followed in Hong Kong. I have sought your advice on US objections
although to the disclaimer which we formulated last year in my minute of 29-March: the 2 subjects are quite separate, your views on that minute vill clearly be relevant to your comments on this one.
2. I am not clear why the DHS have consulted us about this point, but suspect that it arises from a misunderstanding about what is meant in the proposed
Froviding we can dispel boundary disclaimer note by "United Kingdom territories". this misunderstanding along the lines of my minute of 29 March, I suggest that no question of compatibility between the disclaimer and the DS' cartographic practice in Hong Kong arises. The only possible difficulty would surely arise if there were no disclaimer.
is a non-issue.
3.
I should be grateful to know if you agree that this
I am sending a copy of this minute to Mir Janvrin (HKIOD), who may wish to consult Hong Kong about the boundaries which the DS propose showing on the maps of the territory.
