HMG'S POSITION ON SOVEREIGNTY OVER HONG KONG
1. Our Ambassador in Peking has asked us to let him know the last formal statement of HIG's position on sovereignty over Hong Kong. For political reasons we do not seek to reaffirm this publicly and in recent years, as far as I can tell, we have successfully avoided doing so. No-one in FED or HKD can recall such a statement and I would be grateful if you could examine the files to see if they shed any light.
2.
I suggest as a starting point:
(a)
Hansards (perhaps you have a cataloguing system for easy reference?).
(b) Files at about the time of the Hong Kong riots in
1967.
