1. You should by now have heard that I have taken over from Laurence O'Keeffe and that for the next year or so I shall be your ever friendly interlocuter in the Office. I am looking forward to it tremendously, particularly as I have had the chance of seeing Hong Kong several times during the past few years although always as an outsider. Nevertheless, these brief glimpses have been enough to show me what a fascinating and interesting job I have moved into.
2.
The secondary purpose of this letter is to tell you that Monsieur Rodriguez, the French Consul-General designate in Hong Kong, called on me yesterday. We had a long and interesting talk and it became clear that he has been very well briefed indeed.
He is very much a Far East expert having served in Bangkok, Saigon, Peking and Tokyo. I think you will like him as I found him charming and very intelligent indeed.
3. I shall be coming to Hong Kong at the beginning of October inter alia to hear the debate at the opening of LegCo. I shall look forward to seeing you then. Charles has just been in and I am hoping to see him again before he goes back.
