Many thanks for your letter of 19 august about your plans for visiting Leking. I have just returned from Hong hon, where I had a sight, on Charles race-Francis' desk, of the letter from Janvrin and Charles' reply should have indicated my initial reaction which of course was favorable.

we here would certainly welcome a visit by you and would like to turn it into a slightly different sort of visit if you agree. what we have in mind is to trot along to the Bank of China, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and one or two other Chinese organisations with whom we have only very infrequent contact and suggest that as you will be visiting Feking would it not be nice. if you spoke to them about the UK economy and the world economy, either separately or at some sort of joint gathering. If they bite at this we might then be able to extend the discussion to include the Chinese economy and its place in the world economy (although we have few illusions about the substantiveness of any comments that the Chinese may make on these issues). Would you be prepared to undergo this sort of ordeal

One other point is that Rovember will be a busy month for the Commercial Jection in this bassy and it would be preferable if your visit to Leking could be delayed until December. If this is impossible we can cope in Movember.
