WAH KIU MAN PO (October 12) urged the Government to speedily amend the

Companies Law, as stated in the Governor's speech, adding that the existing ordinance was "full of loopholes" and had frequently led to crises in the stock market and even to

economic crisis.

The blame could not be placed on the Review Committee of the Companies Law who had put forward numerous proposals, but should rather be placed on the Government which had failed to implement these suggestions.

"This unwillingness on the part of the Government to introduce changes appeared to have been caused by pressure from certain sectors, and the situation is similar to that where former administrators dared not set up an independent body to deal with the

corruption problem.

"We hope Sir Murray will repeat his excellent performance as when he set up ICAC, and direct attacks at the bad elements in the commercial sector," WAH KIU said.

DOUBLE TENTH FESTIVAL

The 65th Double Tenth Festival drew 11 editorials from both pro-Nationalist and Communist papers during the week under review, of which three were connected with the alleged attempt by the leftists to disrupt the Double Tenth celebrations and urged the Government to pay attention to the matter.

HONG KONG TIMES (October 10), in a short comment, criticised "Communist" elements for spreading rumours that the "right-wing people" would create disturbances here

on Double Tenth.

The paper said that Communist elements were trying to spoil the festive atmosphere of Double Tenth and to arouse anxiety among the population.

KUNG SHEUNG EVENING NEWS (October 9) urged the authorities to put a stop

to the leftists' attempts to disrupt the Double Tenth celebrations.

The paper pointed out that no one could interfere with the celebrations as long as they did not disturb the public peace.

"We hope the Government will give us a clear explanation as to whether people here have the freedom to express their political stand. If the answer is positive, the authorities concerned must stop the leftists from disrupting the Double Tenth celebrations,"

KUNG SHEUNG urged.
